Things You Can Do to Make Your Skin Resurfacing Treatment Last Longer

Skin resurfacing is a popular treatment for wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone. In fact, in the United States alone well over 2 million skin resurfacing treatments are performed each year.

At Chicque Aesthetics, our team uses the Venus VivaTM skin resurfacing system, which combines advanced microneedling techniques with therapeutic radiofrequency energy to help skin renew and repair itself from the inside out.

The results are so beautiful you’ll want to do all you can to make sure they last as long as possible. Here are six ways to do just that.

1. Avoid the sun

This is the top recommendation for making your skin resurfacing results last longer. The reason is that UV rays in sunlight can damage your skin’s collagen network, which means it’s harder for your skin to create new collagen networks right after your treatment.

When new collagen does form, too much sun exposure can quickly destroy it.

Sun exposure also increases production of free radicals, molecules that interfere with your skin’s ability to repair itself. It’s estimated that as much as 90% of skin damage is related to too much sun exposure.

If you must be in the sun, try to avoid being out during peak hours — typically 10am-4pm.

2. Wear sunscreen every day (seriously)

Another important way to avoid sun damage: Wear sunscreen every day, even when it’s cloudy, raining, or snowing. UV rays can penetrate cloud cover and UVA can even go through glass

Choose a sunscreen with zinc or titanium dioxide with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply it throughout the day.

3. Drink plenty of water

Your skin (like the rest of your body) thrives on moisture to stay hydrated, soft, and supple. Moisture helps skin keep its protective barrier to ward off many of the signs of aging.

Moisturizers may help hydrate the upper layers of skin, but to really give your skin the fluid boost it needs you need to drink plenty of water — about eight glasses a day.

Other healthy beverages are OK too, as long as they don’t contain sugar.

4. Use moisturizer

Speaking of moisturizer, applying a good one at least once a day can really help your skin maintain its oil barrier. This is essential for skin that looks and feels firm and hydrated.

Choose a moisturizer that’s right for your skin type and reserve heavier moisturizers for nighttime use so you don’t feel sticky all day.

5. Customize your skin care routine

With a busy schedule, it’s tempting to reach for the same products over and over again without really thinking about whether they’re good for your skin. But spending just a bit of time customizing your products to your skin type, age, and other factors can yield amazing results.

6. Get touch-up treatments

One of the best ways to make sure your skin resurfacing treatment results last as long as possible is to have touch-up treatments as needed. The frequency of your treatments depends on your unique skin structure, age, and other factors.

We can help you tailor a treatment plan that suits your needs and goals.
