The Difference Between a PDO Thread Lift and Surgical Facelift

The Difference Between a PDO Thread Lift and Surgical Facelift

For many people, the face is the first area of the body that shows signs of aging. When you look in the mirror and see wrinkles or sagging skin staring back at you, it’s time to do something.

There was a time not too long ago when turning back the hands of time meant undergoing a surgical facelift. But today, many people turn to the minimally invasive PDO thread lift procedure to tighten sagging skin and take years off their appearance.

At Chicque Aesthetics in Greenwich, Connecticut, our team offers the minimally invasive nonsurgical thread (MINT™) PDO thread lift to help people look younger and feel more confident — without undergoing surgery. Here’s how a PDO thread lift compares to a surgical facelift.

PDO thread lift: The basics

The PDO thread lift uses thin, textured threads strategically placed under your skin to gently lift it. These threads (made of PDO or polydioxanone) are completely absorbable and routinely used in many medical procedures.

The threads are placed under your skin using a special “injector” device that avoids the need for incisions, anesthesia, and external sutures. Once injected, our team gently positions the threads, providing a subtle lift that elevates your skin and restores a more youthful contour.

While the threads provide an immediate visible lift, they also promote the development of collagen, one of the building blocks of youthful skin. Collagen keeps your skin resilient and firm, but as we age, we produce a lot less of it. PDO thread lifts stimulate collagen development around the threads to help prolong results.

PDO thread lift procedure: What to expect

The thread lift procedure is performed right in our office using a local anesthetic to numb the skin. Once the anesthetic takes effect, the threads are injected using hollow devices called cannulas.

The threads are placed just below the surface of the skin. The number of threads and their exact placement will depend on your unique treatment goals, skin tone, and other factors.

Most thread lift procedures take about 15-30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Afterward, you might have some bruising or swelling, but these effects quickly subside. The gentle lift effect lasts about a year.

PDO thread lift. vs. surgical facelift

The PDO thread lift can be a great alternative to facelift surgery, but it’s important to understand the differences between these two popular treatments.

No surgery required

One of the biggest differences is how the procedures are performed. A PDO thread lift is far less invasive than facelift surgery, and it doesn’t require any general anesthesia or sedation. It can be performed right in the office in far less time, and there’s no downtime afterward.

The threads used in a PDO thread lift are absorbed by your body over time, and they leave no scars. And, of course, the PDO thread lift is far less risky — and less costly — than facelift surgery.

Different treatment goals

A PDO thread lift can be a good choice for people with mild to moderate sagging in their faces, mild to moderate wrinkles, and a loss of facial volume. The thread lift can be ideal for issues like:

Our team can vary the placement of the threads as well as the tension of each thread to provide you with a truly custom result.

A surgical facelift can be a good choice for someone with more severe wrinkles, deep lines, or a dramatic loss of tone and volume. Surgical facelifts last longer.
